Blocking Personal Info on Facebook
I’ve finally figured out how to block strangers in Facebook from seeing my personal information. If you are interested here is what you need to do…
1) Of course you need to be logged into your account first then move your mouse over “Friends” located at the top of your Facebook page. A pull down menu will appear, click on “All Friends”.
2) A page will be displayed with all of your friends listed. Right above the first person you will see a button to “Create New List”. Click on the button and a box will open where you can place a name for your list. I suggest you name it something like: Mafia Wars Friends. Then hit enter.
NOTE: If you have a lot of friends then you might like this sweet little trick to select them all automatically. This only works in Firefox web browser (the best web browser ever!). Copy the code below and past it into the field you use to enter a web address and press enter. You must do this while the box is still open that displays all of your friends. Once this is done you will see all of your friends have been selected.
javascript:elms=document.getElementById(‘friends’).getElementsByTagName(‘li’);for(var fid in elms){if(typeof elms[fid] === ‘object’){fs.click(elms[fid]);}}
Now that all of your friends have been selected you can hit “Create List” located at the bottom of the box or you can check off your real friends that you don’t mind sharing personal information with. It’s your call. Once you hit “Create List” this will place all of your friends into the new list that you created.
3) Now that you have created a list for your Mafia Friends you can block them from seeing your personal information. Move your mouse over “Settings” located at the top right of your Facebook page. A pull down menu will appear, click on “Privacy Settings”. Now click on “Profile”.
4) Now you will see Profile, Basic Info, etc. which all have pull down menus next to them. For Profile you want to click the menu and select “Only Friends”.
5) For Basic Info, Personal Info, Status and Links, etc you want to select Customize…
You will see below “Except These People” a green plus sign. Click on the plus sign and you will be shown the name of the Mafia Friends list you created. Select the list and click “Okay”. You will need to repeat this process for all of the other items as well.
Note: When you get to “Photos Tagged of You”, you will need to click on “Edit Photo Albums Privacy Settings” and perform the same procedure I just described on all your photo albums.
6) Don’t forget to click on “Save Changes” at the bottom of the page when you are done making changes! 8)
7) After that is done go back to your “Profile” described in step 3 then look for the box or tab that says “Contact Information”. It’s right next to the “Basic” tab. You need to click on “Contact Information” and repeat the process for all those items as you did in step 5.
8.) Again, don’t forget to click on “Save Changes” at the bottom of the page when you are done making changes! 8)
9) Lastly go back to the top right of your Facebook page and move your mouse over “Settings”. When the pull down menu appears, click on “Privacy Settings”. This time you want to click on “Applications” which is the fourth item down.
10) Now click on the “Settings” tab right next to the “Overview” tab. You will see a bunch of boxes with check marks next to them. Uncheck all the boxes to prevent applications from sharing your information with other people. Then click on “Save Changes” at the bottom of the page.
11) Congratulations you are done! From now on you can start adding new friends to Facebook and select the list that you created and they will be immediately blocked from your personal information when you accept their friendship.
If you find something I missed then please leave a comment. Thanks!
